Urgent care
I am always appreciative of the connivence this office offers.   Today I had a gentleman doctor and I thought although very upbeat and friendly, I was uncomfortable with the religious questions.  I personally believe there is a time and place, at this appointment was not it.  One, I didn’t feel well and the appointment should have stayed about that.  Two, he is  unaware of my circumstances and that was not the place.  I heard how he had converted, he asked me if I did, and it was very uncomfortable because again he had no idea of my circumstances A suggestion to possibly keep the appointment chatter on a lighter note. People coming in don’t feel well to begin with, any kind of heavy conversation may lead to some awkwardness (and it absolutely did).   Faith, and religion should be off the table for light conversation   Thank you.

I would have appreciated assistance in using the mobile check in or availability of another check in option as using my phone and taking ID photos and such was challenging with the injury for which I was seeking care.  I would recommend the provider who treated my injury. Very friendly, attentive, and explained the steps in treatment.

I highly recommend AFC Saugus. I came in on a Saturday morning and was one of the first patients in the clinic. They attended to me quickly and I was in and out in 30 minutes. The physician was easy to work with and attentively listened to my concerns and addressed the symptoms I was experiencing. AFC Saugus will be my top choice should I need medical assistance in the future.

I went I for a couple of issues.  The woman who took my vitals was friendly and competent. Then the resident or PA who saw me was friendly and thorough.  She then called in the doctor who seemed more knowledgable.   They gave me one of the Rx that I thought I needed.said they were going to give Me two But Forgot The second.

Urgent Care in Boston, MA

Boston sits at the center of one of the world's most concentrated clusters of academic medical centers — yet that very density drives emergency room overcrowding that leaves patients waiting an average of 189 minutes before receiving care, the third-longest ER wait in the United States.1 Walk-in urgent care clinics throughout the city offer a faster, more affordable path to treatment for the conditions that don't require a hospital bed.

When does urgent care make more sense than the ER in Boston?

Boston's emergency departments at Mass General Hospital, Brigham and Women's, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center rank among the world's best — but they prioritize life-threatening cases, and patients with non-critical needs routinely wait 12 to 24 hours at flagship teaching hospitals.1 Urgent care clinics treat the same sprains, sinus infections, cuts, and fevers in a fraction of that time, at significantly lower cost.

Go to the ER for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe head injuries, difficulty breathing, or any rapidly worsening condition. Choose urgent care in Boston for flu and cold symptoms, minor cuts needing stitches, UTIs, ear infections, allergic reactions, back pain, minor sports injuries, and rashes.

What do Boston urgent care clinics treat?

Urgent care centers across Boston treat a wide range of non-emergency conditions. You'll find same-day care for respiratory infections and influenza — particularly important during Boston's cold, wet winters when flu spreads rapidly through the city's dense neighborhoods — as well as strep throat, ear infections, urinary tract infections, skin conditions, and minor injuries including lacerations, sprains, and strains.

Many clinics also provide DOT physicals in Boston and sports physicals in Boston for student athletes, commercial drivers, and school programs. On-site X-rays, rapid strep and flu tests, and basic lab work are standard at most locations.

Which urgent care providers serve Boston?

Several established providers operate throughout the city. AFC Urgent Care has multiple Boston locations including Back Bay, offering extended hours and accepting most major insurance plans including MassHealth. MinuteClinic at CVS operates retail health clinics throughout Boston neighborhoods with walk-in availability for minor illnesses, vaccines, and routine physicals. CityMD serves patients at convenient Greater Boston locations with transparent online wait times and rapid check-in.

Nearby communities are equally well-served: urgent care in Cambridge is steps from Harvard and MIT; urgent care in Somerville and urgent care in Quincy serve commuters on the Red Line corridor.

Does urgent care in Boston accept MassHealth?

Yes. MassHealth — Massachusetts' Medicaid program — is widely accepted at urgent care clinics throughout Boston. According to the City of Boston's 2024 Health of Boston Access to Care Report, approximately 43% of Boston residents ages 0–64 are enrolled in MassHealth, with the highest concentrations in Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury.2 Under Massachusetts Medicaid policy updated July 2024, urgent care clinics enrolled in MassHealth managed care networks are required to accept MassHealth enrollees seeking urgent care services, even out of network.3

If you're unsure whether a specific clinic accepts your MassHealth managed care plan, call ahead or verify through your plan's provider directory. Most AFC Urgent Care and MinuteClinic locations accept MassHealth. Boston Medical Center, the city's primary safety-net hospital, also provides financial assistance programs for uninsured patients.

How do Boston's teaching hospitals shape the urgent care landscape?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Boston's population is approximately 675,647 within city limits, with the greater metropolitan area home to roughly 4.9 million residents.4 The city's extraordinary density of universities and colleges — enrolling more than 250,000 students — creates persistent urgent care demand around campuses in Fenway, Mission Hill, Allston-Brighton, and the South End, particularly during fall and winter respiratory virus season.

Massachusetts ranked third in the nation for longest average emergency room wait times in early 2026, with a statewide average of 189 minutes before leaving the hospital.1 The combination of world-class but chronically oversubscribed academic medical centers and a large MassHealth-enrolled population makes Boston's walk-in urgent care network essential infrastructure for the region. Choosing urgent care over the ER for non-emergency needs also reduces unnecessary financial burden — ER visits average several times the cost of a comparable urgent care visit.

Is urgent care available on weekends and evenings in Boston?

Yes. Most urgent care clinics in Boston operate seven days a week, including weekends and evenings, with many open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or later. Extended-hours and after-hours options are available at select locations. Checking real-time hours and wait times before leaving home helps ensure the clinic nearest you is open.
