I visited due to a high fever and feeling generally unwell. The receptionist was very accommodating, and I understand the policy that only the patient is allowed in. However, since I was feeling weak and my wife was more familiar with my recent medications and symptoms, I asked if she could accompany me. Unfortunately, the technician denied my request, stating that I should know my medications, which was delivered in a condescending tone. A bit more empathy and consideration would have been appreciated, especially given that my blood pressure was dangerously low at the time (in the 80s). While I understand policies are in place, the staff could have at least asked my wife for the information without needing her to come in. When I was seen by the PA, I explained my symptoms and asked if I could get an X-ray due to my pulmonary issues. I was told that my insurance might not cover it and that they didn’t have an X-ray technician available. The PA listened to my lungs but didn’t conduct a full physical exam, such as palpating my abdomen. I was tested for flu, RSV, and COVID, with results expected in a day. Given my low blood pressure, they recommended IV fluids (an “immunity bag”) to help stabilize it. However, after three unsuccessful attempts to insert the IV, the tech stated my veins weren’t good, despite me showing them my hands where my veins are typically very visible. Eventually, after multiple failed attempts and giving me bottled water instead, my wife was allowed in to come in. The Tech attempted the IV for a fourth time but was still unsuccessful. At that point, my blood pressure had risen to 100/60, and I was advised to hydrate at home and told that my symptoms might be viral However, I felt something was still very wrong. When my PCP’s office opened, I went there immediately. Upon seeing me, my PCP sent me straight to the ER. In the ER, my blood pressure remained low, and after a thorough physical exam (including abdominal palpation), they discovered tenderness on my right side. Blood work and a CT scan revealed that I was close to sepsis and required an emergency appendectomy. Had I not gone to the ER, the outcome could have been fatal. This experience highlights areas where improvement is needed, particularly in taking proper medical histories and conducting thorough physical examinations. Empathy and active listening to patients’ needs would go a long way in improving care. Thank you.
