Majority of the doctors and staff I have dealt with are respectful, competent, knowledgeable, and supportive of their patients. I will be honest in saying that as with all industries and companies, there are the rare few that don’t really meet these standards, the they have been few and far between. The Doctors and Staff treat patients with respect and care, even when you might snap or be a bit cranky from being ill or in pain. They are gentle and fast to act in the patient’s best interest and care. The Doctors at Mayo literally saved my life when I had Covid six months ago. I will be bluntly honest, I had to wait nearly 7 hours to get into a bed from the ER Waiting room, when I went in with Covid. BUT, the staff were always aware of me and checking on me and others in the room. They let me and my caregiver know that they are just waiting for a bed to open up, because of the high level of Covid cases. It was also known that the hospital, like so many other hospitals worldwide, was severely understaffed. Having said that, the staff that Mayo employs is Top Notch! Which is where the savings my life comes into play. The Mayo Clinic is linked into a network where your doctors can instantly share your medical information and pull up whatever they need to in order to help treat you better. Which helps greatly when you have complex medical conditions that require the doctors to have details about your conditions in order to make decisions quickly in an emergency situation. Something that just wouldn’t be available if I’d gone to an outside Emergency Room for my Covid condition. One of the most wonderful things about Mayo is their Portal. It allows you to see your Appointments, labs, doctors notes, test results, and so much more. You can message all the doctors in your care team, and the people in various departments like financial, medical records and other areas to manage your care more actively. Though Scheduling and Rescheduling of appointments are handled in person or on the phone, by either the department reaching out to schedule or calling to schedule appointments. There is the ability to schedule appointments online through the Portal, especially labs imaging, and various medical tests; some specialists have to be contacted directly or they have to contact you. Canceling is easily done through the Portal and you can add your appointments directly to your calendar and Apple Wallet via the Portal as well so you can make planning easier. Checking in is rather simple, you can simply do most of it on your portal, and then finish by going to the desk to say you’re here. Or go to the desk on your floor and do it there. It quick either way, though I’ve found doing the pre-check in shaves a little bit of time off the wait more often than not. As with all medical situations, waiting is inevitable. Unfortunately now we are in a situation of hospitals being under staffed. It’s a balance of not sacrificing patient care with not having patients waiting too long as well. I don’t blame the doctors if I have to wait a little while longer than expected. It lets me know that I will most likely get the level of care, consideration, and attention to my condition that is deserve. My advice is to always plan for leeway for medical appointments of any kind, no matter where you decide to go, because the situation is worldwide. I saw someone say that they never saw anyone cleaning anything. Well, that’s a good thing. You aren’t supposed to see the cleaning staff most of the time. The chemicals they use to clean can potentially cause problems for patients in the hospital. So unless you have been admitted into the hospital for something, you probably won’t see the cleaning staff very often. When I was in for a week after my cancer surgery, I saw them in my room cleaning twice every day. When I was in the Hospital for Covid, I saw them Once a day at first then twice later on when I was doing better. But that could just be because I was awake to actually see them. Does Mayo take insurance? As far as I know Mayo takes a broad range of insurances and they have special grants and other programs for people that are eligible in order to help pay for their care if necessary. The Vast Majority of the Doctors and Staff the work within the Mayo Clinic do so because the love to help people and want to help them get better. To me, someone that spends more than half of my adult life in hospitals, medical offices, and doing medical tests of some kind…? The Mayo Clinic has provided a level of comfort, compassion, and most of all Safety when it comes to my health care. So, I highly recommend giving them a chance, especially if you are in need of someone that is willing to do more than the basics.
