I came to have my 1 year old daughter seen to get clearance from a doctor. When my husband and I walked through the door, we were immediately met with the security guard and someone else who was extremely rude. My mother has been going to this clinic since I was a child specifically for walk in appointments and advised me to go to get one for my daughter who needed clearance in order to return to daycare. The first thing they asked is if we had an appointment to which we said no and they proceeded to try to grab a card that had the number for NYC Health Hospitals so that we could call to make an appointment . I informed them that I know how the process works but I need to get doctors clearance in order for my child to go back to daycare tomorrow. The guy said " I don't care where you go; there's no doctor that will give a doctors note if she's not seen. " and I said to him " I'm well aware of that. That's not what I was saying. I'm saying she needs to be seen " he interrupted me and said " so take her to emergency care " I know as someone who's been to emergency care that the copay is higher if it's ER vs urgent care. Thus, I asked him " If my daughter is not able to come here to be seen, then is there an urgent care around here ? " he said " you can take her to one around here but they're probably not open. " I turned to my husband and I said " let's just go " and the guy asked " why would you come here if you didn't have an appointment? " and I explained to him that " when I was younger, my mom came here for walk ins to have me seen and get a doctors note so if this has changed then we can go somewhere else. That's it. " then he said well why'd you wait so late and I said " I'm pregnant and I went to my doctor to have a nuchal screening in Manhattan. " to which the security guard just got fed up and said " just go upstairs ". I went upstairs but the long story short is that we weren't able to receive what we needed and I just wish they didn't take up so much time nor have to be rude about the entire situation. It's disappointing because you want to get care in your own community but this is exactly why I feel compelled to see Black physicians who have offices in Manhattan for my prenatal care because there is a lack of support from my own area in terms of getting help. And that is truly disappointing and part of the challenge of why people in our community mistrust the medical system in general.
