I usually have a real positive experience at your facility. But this time it was not as much so. I still left with pain and nothing really to help. The only positive thing was he told me what the problem was. I do have an appointment with my orthopedic doctor tomorrow. I do appreciate having the insight as to what the problem was.

Urgent Care in Dallas, TX

Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas logged 235,893 emergency department visits in 2024 — making it the busiest emergency department in the United States. At the same time, Dallas County has the highest uninsured rate in North Texas, with 23.6% of residents — more than 528,000 people — lacking health coverage. Those two facts are directly connected, and they explain why urgent care centers play an outsized role in Dallas's healthcare ecosystem.

What conditions do Dallas urgent care centers treat?

Urgent care centers in Dallas treat a wide range of non-emergency medical conditions, including respiratory infections, sinus and ear infections, strep throat, flu, COVID-19, UTIs, sprains and strains, cuts requiring stitches, minor burns, rashes, and allergic reactions. Most locations also offer on-site X-ray, lab testing, and same-day prescription writing.

CareNow and Concentra — both Dallas-founded chains — operate extensive networks across the DFW metro. Baylor Scott & White Urgent Care and Texas Health Urgent Care provide additional coverage across Dallas and surrounding communities. Many locations also offer occupational health services: drug screening, pre-employment physicals, and workplace injury evaluations. Most accept walk-ins and can be booked online through Solv.

Why is Dallas's ER system under so much pressure?

Dallas County's 23.6% uninsured rate is the highest in North Texas — significantly above the Texas statewide average of 16.7%, which is itself the highest in the nation. Among foreign-born residents, the uninsured rate reaches 41.6%; among Latinos of any race, 35.1%. More than 16% of Dallas County children are uninsured.

Texas did not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, which means hundreds of thousands of working adults in Dallas — regardless of how long they've lived or worked in the city — don't qualify for Medicaid and can't afford private insurance. Research from Texas 2036 found that uninsured Texans rely heavily on emergency departments even for preventable, non-emergency conditions, driving up ER volume and wait times across the county.

Parkland Memorial, Dallas County's public hospital and legal safety-net provider for uninsured patients, logged 235,893 ER visits in 2024 — an average of nearly 646 visits per day. The result: average ER wait times of 5.7 hours at Parkland, 4.8 hours at Baylor University Medical Center, and 3.9 hours at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Urgent care centers, which typically see patients in under an hour, offer a faster and more affordable option for the large share of Dallas residents whose conditions don't require emergency-level care.

STAR, Medicaid, and health insurance coverage in Dallas

Texas's Medicaid managed care program for children, pregnant women, and qualifying families is called STAR. Dallas County is one of the largest STAR enrollment counties in Texas, reflecting the metro's large working-family and low-income population. Most urgent care centers in Dallas accept STAR, including CareNow, Concentra, Baylor Scott & White Urgent Care, and other major chains across the metro.

Because Texas has not expanded Medicaid, most adults without dependent children don't qualify — regardless of income. This leaves many working Dallas residents in the coverage gap: too high-income for STAR, too low-income to afford commercial insurance, and ineligible for Medicaid. Urgent care centers with transparent self-pay pricing are often the most accessible option for these residents who need medical attention without the cost and time of an emergency room visit.

Major commercial insurers accepted at Dallas urgent care centers include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Humana. Confirm your specific plan is accepted when booking.

Finding urgent care across Dallas's sprawling metro

Dallas proper spans more than 340 square miles, and the broader DFW metro stretches across some 9,000 square miles of North Texas. The metro encompasses dozens of distinct communities — from Uptown and Oak Lawn near downtown, to Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove on the South Side, to Addison, Richardson, and Carrollton to the north and northeast. East Dallas neighborhoods including East Lake and Lakewood, as well as Southern Dallas communities that have historically had fewer healthcare resources, all have different urgent care access profiles.

South Dallas and the Southern Sector — which has historically been underserved by both primary care and urgent care providers — remains an area where access is more limited relative to need. Real-time wait times and same-day booking for Dallas urgent care centers across the entire metro are available on Solv, allowing patients to check current availability and hold a spot before they leave home.

Emergency room or urgent care in Dallas — how do you decide?

Call 911 or go to an emergency room for chest pain, signs of stroke (sudden numbness, facial drooping, slurred speech), difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, major trauma, or any life-threatening emergency. Dallas has strong Level I trauma infrastructure at Parkland Memorial, Baylor University Medical Center, and Methodist Dallas. However, given average ER wait times of 3.9 to 5.7 hours across Dallas County hospitals, emergency rooms should be reserved for true emergencies.

For conditions that are uncomfortable or concerning but not life-threatening — infections, minor injuries, sprains, fevers, rashes, or respiratory illness — urgent care is the right choice. Most Dallas urgent care centers see patients in under an hour and can handle X-rays, lab tests, and prescriptions on-site. During hot North Texas summers, urgent care is also appropriate for heat exhaustion; for heat stroke — body temperature above 103°F with confusion or loss of consciousness — call 911.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • Does urgent care in Dallas accept STAR (Medicaid)?

Yes. Most urgent care centers in Dallas accept STAR, Texas's Medicaid managed care program for children, pregnant women, and qualifying families. Dallas County is one of the largest STAR enrollment counties in Texas. CareNow, Concentra, Baylor Scott & White Urgent Care, and other major chains accept STAR across the Dallas metro. You can confirm insurance acceptance for any clinic when booking through Solv.
  • Why is Dallas County's uninsured rate so high?

Dallas County has a 23.6% uninsured rate — the highest in North Texas and well above the Texas statewide average of 16.7%, which is itself the highest in the nation. The primary driver is Texas's decision not to expand Medicaid: working adults without dependent children typically don't qualify regardless of income. Dallas County's large immigrant and Latino communities, who face higher uninsured rates, compound the issue. This is why Parkland Memorial — the county's safety-net hospital — runs the nation's busiest emergency department.
  • How long is the wait at urgent care vs. an ER in Dallas?

Dallas County hospital ERs have significant average wait times: Parkland Memorial averages approximately 5.7 hours, Baylor University Medical Center approximately 4.8 hours, and Methodist Dallas Medical Center approximately 3.9 hours — a nearly 4-hour spread across the county. Urgent care centers in Dallas typically see patients in under an hour for non-emergency conditions. For illnesses and injuries that don't require emergency care, urgent care is substantially faster and less costly.
  • What insurance do urgent care centers in Dallas accept?

Most Dallas urgent care centers accept STAR (Medicaid), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Humana. Self-pay and uninsured patients are accepted at most locations, with transparent cash-pay pricing. Given Dallas County's high uninsured rate, many urgent care centers have experience working with uninsured patients and offer affordable options. Check the clinic's Solv listing to confirm your specific plan before booking.
  • When should I go to an ER instead of urgent care in Dallas?

Go to an emergency room or call 911 for chest pain, signs of stroke (sudden numbness, facial drooping, slurred speech), difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, major trauma, or any life-threatening emergency. Parkland Memorial, Baylor University Medical Center, and Methodist Dallas all have Level I trauma capabilities. For heat stroke during North Texas summers — body temperature above 103°F with confusion or loss of consciousness — call 911 immediately. For non-emergencies, urgent care is faster and more affordable.
  • Are there urgent care centers open after hours or on weekends in Dallas?

Yes. Most urgent care centers in Dallas are open on weekends, and many offer extended evening hours on weekdays. Hours vary by location — many operate from 8am to 8pm seven days a week. CareNow, Concentra, and other chains maintain consistent hours across their Dallas-area locations. Use Solv to check real-time hours, availability, and current wait times for Dallas urgent care centers, and book a same-day appointment to hold your spot.
