Urgent care
Had pain in my left foot after a fall. Broke it. Very nice nurse, doctor and xray tech.. bathroom needed attention. No paper towels or hand sanitizer. Needed hand sanitizer and kleenex in waiting room. This will be my go-to non-ER facility. Lots better than Texas Med clinic.

Urgent care
When checking in at the Texas MedClinic waiting time was lengthy, but once we were called to the back. The Medical Assistant was absolutely very Thorough has a excellent personality I would like if Esther skills were passed on to the intire team. The Doctor also was very thorough and explaining over the treatment and follow up. I diffently would recommend this facility. Just make sure and register online before arriving so it can cut down on the waiting time.

Urgent care
Scheduling was easy, I did it the night before. When I arrived, I was 2nd in line according to their link, and there didn’t seem to be many people there. Still, it took over an hour to be taken back and nearly 2 hours when all was said and done. This is my Urgent Care clinic of choice, but I’ve never seen this doctor before and it’s never taken this long in the past. Still, I would continue to use this clinic. Staff were friendly and my prescription was sent to my pharmacy promptly.

Urgent Care in San Antonio, TX

San Antonio earned the nickname "Military City USA" for good reason — Joint Base San Antonio is the Department of Defense's largest joint base installation, with more than 80,000 active-duty service members and 173,000 veterans calling Bexar County home. That military concentration, combined with an 18.9% uninsured rate that exceeds even Texas's already-high statewide average, makes urgent care one of the most essential healthcare access points in the metro.

What conditions do San Antonio urgent care centers treat?

Urgent care centers in San Antonio treat a wide range of non-emergency conditions: respiratory infections, sinus and ear infections, sore throats, flu, COVID-19, strep, UTIs, sprains and strains, cuts requiring stitches, minor burns, rashes, and allergic reactions. Most locations also offer on-site X-ray, lab testing, and same-day prescription writing.

Texas MedClinic — a San Antonio–founded chain operating more than 20 locations across the metro — is among the largest regional urgent care networks in the city. CareNow, NextCare, and Concentra also have a significant presence, with many locations offering occupational health services including drug screening, workplace injury evaluations, pre-employment physicals, and DOT certification exams — services in high demand given San Antonio's large military contractor and logistics employment base.

How does TRICARE work at urgent care centers in San Antonio?

Active-duty service members, military retirees, and their families covered by TRICARE can visit urgent care centers in San Antonio without a referral. As of January 1, 2018, TRICARE Prime enrollees no longer need a referral for urgent care visits, and point-of-service charges no longer apply for urgent care claims. Beneficiaries can go directly to any TRICARE-authorized urgent care center in the network for non-emergency conditions.

Joint Base San Antonio's medical infrastructure is anchored by Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) on Fort Sam Houston — the U.S. Army's flagship medical institution and the Department of Defense's only Level I Trauma Center. BAMC serves active-duty personnel, military families, retirees, and civilian emergency patients. For non-emergency care when on-base appointments aren't immediately available, network urgent care centers provide a convenient, covered alternative.

Veterans in San Antonio can also explore VA Community Care options for urgent care, particularly through the San Antonio VA Medical Center. The VA's Community Care Network allows eligible veterans to receive urgent care at approved civilian urgent care centers when VA facilities have limited availability.

STAR, Medicaid, and health insurance coverage in San Antonio

Texas's Medicaid managed care program for children, pregnant women, and qualifying families is called STAR. Bexar County ranks third in the state for STAR enrollment, with more than 400,000 residents covered — reflecting San Antonio's large working-family and low-income population. Most urgent care centers in San Antonio accept STAR, including Texas MedClinic, CareNow, and NextCare locations throughout the metro.

Texas did not expand Medicaid, which means many working adults without dependent children do not qualify regardless of income. Combined with Bexar County's 18.9% uninsured rate — above the statewide average of 16.7%, itself the highest in the nation — this creates a substantial population without regular healthcare access. Urgent care centers, with transparent self-pay pricing, serve as one of the most accessible options for uninsured San Antonio residents who need care without the cost and wait of an emergency room.

Major commercial insurers widely accepted at San Antonio urgent care centers include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Humana. Confirm your specific plan is accepted before visiting to avoid unexpected charges.

Finding urgent care across San Antonio's sprawling metro

San Antonio spans more than 460 square miles — one of the largest geographic footprints of any U.S. city. The metro is organized around several distinct areas: the Medical Center district on the northwest side near UT Health San Antonio and major hospital campuses, the high-growth Stone Oak and Alamo Ranch corridors in the far north, the South Side along Highway 281, the East Side, and the urban core near the River Walk and downtown.

Urgent care density is highest on the North Side, particularly along Loop 1604 and in the Medical Center corridor, where CHRISTUS Health, Methodist Healthcare, and University Health maintain major facilities. South and East San Antonio have historically had fewer outpatient options — urgent care centers in these neighborhoods serve a critical access function for residents who might otherwise face long ER waits or lack nearby primary care providers.

Real-time wait times and same-day booking for San Antonio urgent care centers across all these areas are available on Solv, allowing patients to confirm availability and hold a spot before leaving home.

Emergency room or urgent care in San Antonio — how do you choose?

Call 911 or go to an emergency room for chest pain, signs of stroke (sudden numbness, facial drooping, slurred speech), difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, major trauma, or any condition you believe is life-threatening. San Antonio's major ERs include University Health with an average wait time of approximately 6.0 hours, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Medical Center at approximately 3.3 hours, and Brooke Army Medical Center for DoD-eligible patients at approximately 3.6 hours.

San Antonio's summers — with temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F from June through September — also drive seasonal urgent care demand. Heat exhaustion, which presents with heavy sweating, weakness, and nausea, can be evaluated and treated at urgent care. For heat stroke — marked by body temperature above 103°F, confusion, or loss of consciousness — call 911 immediately.

For conditions that are uncomfortable or concerning but not life-threatening — infections, minor injuries, fevers, or respiratory illness — urgent care is appropriate, faster, and typically lower cost. Most San Antonio urgent care centers see patients in under an hour and can handle X-rays, labs, and prescriptions on-site.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • How does TRICARE work at urgent care centers in San Antonio?

TRICARE beneficiaries in San Antonio can visit urgent care centers without a referral. You can go directly to any TRICARE-authorized network urgent care center for non-emergency conditions. San Antonio has broad TRICARE network coverage given its large military population — confirm a specific clinic's TRICARE participation before visiting.
  • Does urgent care in San Antonio accept STAR (Medicaid)?

Yes. Most urgent care centers in San Antonio accept STAR, Texas's Medicaid managed care program for children, pregnant women, and qualifying families. Bexar County ranks third in the state for STAR enrollment, with more than 400,000 residents covered. Texas MedClinic, CareNow, and NextCare locations across San Antonio accept STAR. You can confirm insurance acceptance for any specific clinic when booking through Solv.
  • How long is the wait at urgent care vs. an ER in San Antonio?

San Antonio's major emergency departments have significant average wait times: University Health averages approximately 6.0 hours, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Medical Center approximately 3.3 hours, and Brooke Army Medical Center approximately 3.6 hours. Urgent care centers in San Antonio typically see patients in under an hour for non-emergency conditions. Most San Antonio urgent care centers accept TRICARE, STAR (Medicaid), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Humana.
