What is a BMP blood test?

A BMP blood test examines eight different components in your blood to see if your body is functioning properly. The metabolism, energy levels, chemical balance, and organ function are all examined in this examination. If you have a chronic condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease, it may be done as part of a routine checkup. During a BMP, your doctor draws a small sample of your blood and sends it to the lab for testing and analysis.

What is included in a basic metabolic panel?

A BMP measures the levels of eight substances in your blood. The factors tested include blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood glucose, calcium, carbon dioxide, chloride, creatinine, potassium, and sodium. If you have abnormally high levels of one or more of these substances, you may have a serious health concern that requires immediate attention.
