What happens if you test positive for group B strep?

Adults rarely have signs or sickness from Group B strep, but it can be harmful for newborn babies. Antibiotics are routinely administered to women who test positive for group B strep during pregnancy to prevent the infection from being transmitted to the baby as it travels through the birth canal. Antibiotics are not required for women with group B strep who are having a scheduled Cesarean section since the baby will not be exposed to the germs in the birth canal.
