Melanie went out of her way to accommodate my husband and me when we came in to get Covid tests. Due to our unforeseen scheduling error, we didn't have an appointment at that time, but she said we could wait in case she could fit us in between patients, even though they were fully booked. She was able to complete our tests quickly and courteously. We were extremely pleased with the care we received. Thanks, Melanie!

Had impacted ear wax removed. (I had a hearing test previously at another place who told me I’d have to go to an ENT to remove it.) Everything from the ease of scheduling to checking in was very efficient. There was very little wait time and all of the staff of kind and professional.

Getting Tested for STDs in San Mateo, CA

Who should get tested for STDs?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anyone who is sexually active should consider regular STD testing as part of their overall health routine. This is especially true for those with multiple partners, those who do not consistently use protection, and those who have had an STD in the past. Additionally, certain groups, such as men who have sex with men, individuals with HIV, and pregnant women, may be at a higher risk and should consider more frequent testing.

Importance of getting tested

Getting tested for STDs is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, many STDs can be asymptomatic, meaning you may not know you have one. Undiagnosed and untreated STDs can lead to serious health complications, including infertility, certain types of cancer, and increased risk of HIV transmission. Secondly, knowing your status can help protect your sexual partners from infection. Lastly, early detection often leads to more effective treatment.

STD testing options in San Mateo, CA:

Urgent care and walk-in clinics

Urgent care and walk-in clinics are excellent options for STD testing in San Mateo. For instance, After Hour Pediatrics on Baldwin Ave and Carbon Health Urgent & Primary Care on W Sailer Dr both offer STD testing services. With Solv, you can book same-day and next-day appointments at these locations.

Primary care providers

Your primary care provider can also provide STD testing. If you have a longstanding relationship with your provider, it may be more comfortable to discuss your sexual health with them.

Free STD testing and community health centers

For those without insurance or with financial constraints, free STD testing may be available at community health centers in San Mateo. It's important to check with each center regarding their testing services and any associated costs.

At-home testing

At-home STD testing is another convenient option. These kits can be ordered online, used in the privacy of your own home, and then sent back to a lab for results.

Prevalence of STDs in San Mateo

According to the CDC, the prevalence of STDs in San Mateo County is consistent with national trends, with cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis on the rise. Compared to nearby counties like Washoe County and Tuolumne County, San Mateo County has a higher incidence rate of these STDs. The increase in cases could be attributed to several factors, including increased testing, lack of awareness about STD prevention, and changes in sexual behavior.

Risk factors related to STDs in San Mateo

Several risk factors could contribute to the prevalence of STDs in San Mateo. These include a high population density, a diverse population with potentially disparate access to healthcare, and social factors such as poverty and drug use. Additionally, the proximity to major urban centers like San Francisco and San Jose may also play a role in the spread of STDs. Despite these risks, with 684 nearby locations available for testing, residents of San Mateo have ample resources to maintain their sexual health.
