Overview of STD Testing in Selma

Who should get tested for STDs?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sexually active adults, particularly those with multiple partners or new partners, should get tested regularly for STDs. This includes individuals who are in a monogamous relationship, as STDs can remain dormant for years without showing symptoms. It's also crucial for pregnant women to get tested, as STDs can have severe health impacts on both the mother and the baby.

Importance of getting tested

Getting tested for STDs is essential for several reasons. First, many STDs do not show symptoms immediately, meaning you could be infected and unknowingly transmitting the disease to others. Second, untreated STDs can lead to severe health complications, including infertility, cancer, and increased risk of HIV. Lastly, early detection through testing allows for timely treatment, which can prevent these complications and stop the spread of the disease.

STD testing options in Selma, TX:

Urgent care and walk-in clinics

Urgent care and walk-in clinics are excellent options for STD testing. These facilities offer quick, convenient testing services, often with same-day or next-day appointments available. In Selma, TX, Access Total Care in nearby Schertz is a highly-rated option, with a 4.91 rating based on 23 reviews.

Primary care providers

Your primary care provider can also conduct STD testing. This can be a comfortable option if you have a long-standing relationship with your provider. However, appointment availability might not be as flexible as at urgent care centers.

Free STD testing and community health centers

Free STD testing is available at community health centers. These centers are vital resources for those without insurance or with limited financial means. However, the availability of appointments and the range of tests offered may vary.

At-home testing

At-home testing kits are another alternative. These kits can be ordered online, used in the privacy of your home, and then mailed to a lab for analysis. Results are typically available online within a few days.

Prevalence of STDs in Selma

While specific data for Selma, TX is not readily available, according to the CDC, Texas has seen a steady increase in STD rates over the past decade, mirroring a national trend. Guadalupe County, where Selma is located, has also experienced this increase. It's important to note that these numbers may be underreported due to stigma and lack of testing.

Risk factors related to STDs in Selma

Risk factors for STDs in Selma are similar to those in other parts of the country. These include having unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, and a lack of regular testing. Additionally, certain demographics, such as young adults and men who have sex with men, are at a higher risk. Social factors, such as lack of access to healthcare and education, can also contribute to higher STD rates.

Remember, you can book same-day and next-day testing appointments at urgent care centers and medical laboratories through Solv’s website and mobile app. With 315 locations available for testing, it's never been easier to take control of your sexual health.
