I was third in line (2 people ahead of me) and somehow i was waiting for 2 hours and then once i was finally back, it took another hour. I don’t understand how seeing three people took three hours. Provider was fantastic but wait was atrocious.

Came to the office on Sunday when my right eye was swollen, red and painfull and realized I had a red bumpy Rash on the bridge if my nose and it was painful under my glasses. Had headaches. Waited about 2hrs to see the staff. Staff was courteous, but it was a long wait to see the assistant and Dr. After giving symptoms to assistant, sge gave me an eye test naming the letters. The Dr. came in a few mins later for about 10 mins just looked at me and said I had shingles/herpes virus and it infected my eye and I need to see my eye Dr. Mon. Because it can cause blindness if not treated right away. She sent RX to my pharmacy and said goodbye.

Friendly Staff

Had been experiencing jaw pain for a few days and I knew I wouldn’t be able to see my dentist until at least Monday. I was hesitant to go urgent care on a Saturday, I assumed I’d be waiting forever and for jaw pain, they wouldn’t be able to do much. But actually, I reserved a spot online and they took me right away. The medical assistant and doctor were so nice, helped me as best as they could, and sent me home with a prescription that eased the pain tremendously the next day. I’d never been to this location before but I’m glad I made the trip and the next time I need to go to urgent care, I’ll be going here. Thank you everyone at AFC Piscataway !

Recent COVID-19 Testing Reviews (20)

The place was busy there was a sign that said to be patient as they were running slow or something to that affect. Only seemed to have one front desk person usually they have a few. Person was nice not as friendly as they usually are I think she needed more staff to help her. Check in went smoothly. I have a voice issue so woman took my typed up phone to communicate with her and she was nice and understanding about it so that was nice. We just went to get a Covid test and the nurse wasn’t as thorough as they usually are. She didn’t take oxygen level and only did temperature when I asked her to do so. She seemed quick didn’t converse with us as friendly as they usually are. Also my daughters height and weight was already in the system but I never gave it to anyone . She said I must of given it over the phone I said no. So she took her weight but did not take her height. Did not do blood pressure either . Found it odd how they didn’t take any of this stuff but I just wanted to get in and out so didn’t speak up. I liked the phone check in while waiting but with my voice disability it was hard for me to talk on the phone. Overall good experience but not as good as I usually have at this place . We go there often and my only thought is they were in a rush and understaffed this day. I recommend this place to friends as I usually have a good experience. We do walk ins.

I came for rapid covid testing because I was exposed. After I paid my copay I was informed the doctor would make the determination whether I would receive a rapid test or not. I received a phone call for screening and then I was called into the room. The person never introduced herself. Did the test, I again requested a rapid and was told I couldn't have one was given a paper to create a Quest account and left. I was very dissatisfied. There are no shortage of tests and I am not sure why I was unable to get the test I requested. My sister's have come to Riverside for testing before and were never charged a copay. I understand why I needed to present my insurance but not sure why I had to pay a copay. Overall I was very dissatisfied. I went to City MD first but they were packed so in a friend's suggestion I went to Riverside which was empty. I now see why.

I had gone to 4 facilities looking to take a covid test. I was not feeling good. When I got to urgent care I was treated very well, my wait time was 10 minutes, and the women who gave me the test was so nice and understanding and very helpful and compassionate.

- Verified patient on 10/17

The staff was super friendly and the check-in was seamless. However, my appointment scheduled online was for 9am for a COVID test so that I could be in and out of the facility. I checked in and had to wait for over 45 min. While waiting in the waiting room I received a call from the office however was not aware that would be happening so did not know who was calling. I called back the number to watch the receptionist answer my call and then place me on hold. Then received another call from same number to confirm my name, birthday, weight, height and reason for visit all while sitting in the office outside of the reception desks. It was defiantly a weird process and to only be in the actual room with the technician for 3 minutes.

- Verified patient on 10/25

It was a very pleasant experience considering I was there for a Covid test!! The staff was very friendly and professional.

- Verified patient on 3/20

Because I was not there and requiring a covid test, I felt like my reason for visiting was not addressed or handled or taken seriously by the doctor. It came across that it was unimportant. The Dr beat around the bush and wasn’t interested in addressing the reason I was there. Everything has become about covid covid covid and it’s reached a ridiculous level now. I had a similar situation with my daughter at another local urgent care. I had hoped Riverside was different. I’ve always had great experiences there. This time, not so much. My doctor seemed more concerned about protecting her license rather than actually providing a service. All I wanted was to get checked out and get a return to work note after having a slight cold and staying gone from work for a few days. I’m very upset and I doubt I’ll ever go there again or recommend for anyone to go there. Terrible.

- Verified patient on 10/21

There were two people at the front desk when I walked in on 11/13 @ 6:00pm. One was dealing with a patient and the other was WATCHING a MOVIE. I stood there trying to make eye contact so he can check me in and it took a few mins of me standing for him to recognize me. As I went towards him I can see he was watching a MOVIE on his laptop even though he saw me and my mother coming in. However, the tech or nurse who swabbed our nose for the COVID test was a very nice man who cared about the service he was providing. He deserves a raise while the employee watching movies at the check In point needs to be disciplined.

I wanted to get CoVID test ASAP. It was the only place that would give me an appointment within one day. The process was simple. You book an appointment online and fill out preliminary paperwork before you go. They ask that you show up 15 minutes before to do triage. I waited no more than 10 minutes before i was called to come in. The staff were all very friendly and made me feel at ease. I was in and out under an hour. I would definitely be back if I need more testing done and absolutely recommend Riverside Urgent Care.

- Verified patient on 1/5

Considering I have had many Covid-19 test, this experience took way to long. I booked the appointment the night before so the procedure should have been fast, cut, and dry. My appointment was scheduled for 14:30. I arrived at 14:15. I sat before an interviewer and was asked many of the same questions I answered online the night before. At 14:50 the interviewer instructed me to have a seat and wait to be called. So I sat and waited, and waited. At 15:00 a representative in the building called to confirm my name, date of birth, and other questions I answered while making the appointment the night before, and the same questions I was asked by the interviewer a few moments before. The phone interviewer said a nurse would be calling in a few minutes. More sitting. Finally, at 15:20 I was called. The nurse asked me, again, do I have any symptoms. Finally, I had the nasal COVID test. I was given the LabCorp instructions to check my results. I departed the clinic at 15:28, it took 73 minutes to receive a test I have had 17 times previously since July. Never has the process taken this long. Unsatisfactory!

Everything went smooth with my Covid test. Staff was professional and friendly. Service was quick for the time I had an appointment for. Process was pretty seamless.

The website indicated that your facility administered rapid COVID testing. That is all I wanted. I was not suffering any symptoms but I needed a rapid test to go to a party. I did not need a physical exam. You need to clarify that patients cannot just get a simple test at your facility like they can at a drug store.

- Verified patient on 10/30

Filled out info online for Covid test appointment. Checked in online from parking lot. Waited half hour to go in and fill out same info on paper forms. Test on 12/23 Sent inquiry on LabCorp portal for results on 12/28. Received email that results would post to portal in 4 to 5 days with attached report dated 12/24. So your lab lost my results for a deadly disease!

- Verified patient on 12/29

I went in for a Covid test for travel. I can’t remember the names of the nurses who attended to me but they were both so pleasant and friendly. I was checked in by 8:06am and walked out the door by 8:20am. I would highly recommend this facility.

- Verified patient on 8/10

Was there for a COVID test thought I was getting a rapid test was told after they did the test that it was not a rapid test . But besides that, very nice ladies working front desk. And I think you should separate people that are coming in with sure signs of COVID from other patients

- Verified patient on 12/21

I like the no hassle covid testing with results in one day

- Verified patient on 1/6

Arrived at 4:45 pm for an appointment that was scheduled ahead for 5:00 pm and was not seen until after 5:40 pm. Was denied a rapid covid test despite telling the attending physician that I had exposure at work and had young children at home who were not of age to be vaccinated and was told because I didn't have symptoms they would not approve me for a rapid test. I was also told that I would receive the results of my PCR test within 24 hours of testing but have still not received the results two days later. Would not recommend going this urgent care center.

- Verified patient on 9/17

Everything and everyone was amazing but I am very disappointed that myself and my family members were erroneously charged a copay for covid tests. I paid $160 (which is a hardship) when the copay should have been waived.

- Verified patient on 10/9

Christina Sternesky, the APN who administered the COVID test, WAS AN ABSOLUTE GEM. SO FRIENDLY, SO PERSONABLE, SO NICE. I’m sure she has swabbed hundreds of noses over the last year and she made us feel like we were the only ones. A true angel.

- Verified patient on 9/26

The front desk staff were amazing. However, the assistant and doctor talked to me like I was some uneducated low life. I asked for a rapid Covid test for my son AND NOTHING MORE from them. They were condescending and the assistant was arguing with me. Then I heard her outside our room, basically gossiping about our situation very loudly with the other staff. Unprofessional! Especially with other patients in other rooms. My son’s results were written on, stating that the results were not clearance yo return to school (it was a negative result). Then the date was written over and looked very unprofessional, as if a mistake was made and they attempted to fix it. It also looked like maybe the date was being changed. When I brought the paper to my son’s school, I explained how I had received the results and asked them to call your facility if there was a problem with the date on the letter. Be ve advised that I did not ask for any clearance to return to school. I already had a letter that stated that my son could return to school, as long as he had a negative Covid test result.

Excessive wait time but the person administering the covid test was great!

Springfield COVID Testing & Rapid Testing

Types of COVID Tests

There are two types of coronavirus tests (COVID-19 tests) available, those that can test for a current infection (viral test) and those that can test for a past infection (antibody test).

Viral COVID testing can be done in a few different ways, the most common being nose swabs, but saliva tests are becoming more popular. Some tests are processed out on-site and can provide results in as little as 30 minutes. These are called rapid COVID tests. The majority of tests, on the other hand, are collected at the clinic on-site and then submitted to off-site labs for processing. Results can take up to 2-3 days to arrive.

Antibody testing looks for a past infection and may not reveal if you have an active COVID-19 infection because antibodies can take up to three weeks to form in your body. The presence of COVID antibodies may help to prevent you from becoming infected with the same virus again; but, because the clinical understanding of COVID-19 is still developing, it's unclear how long that protection will continue.

Who should get tested for current infection

The CDC currently defines four instances where COVID testing is recommended:

  1. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 including fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
  2. If you have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19. Close contact is defined as within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. If you have been vaccinated, or tested positive in the past 3 months and not experiencing symptoms, you do not need to be tested.
  3. If you are unvaccinated and participated in high-risk activities where distancing is not an option. This could include travel, large social or mass gatherings, crowded indoor settings, etc.
  4. If you have been referred to get a COVID test by your healthcare provider or local health department.

How is testing done for COVID-19?

Most COVID tests are collected by a nasal swab. A member of the medical team puts a swab inside your nose for a few seconds on each side to collect the sample. After that, the samples are packaged according to CDC guidelines and tested on-site or transported to a facility for testing. The lab will test samples for the presence of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID infection and either your care provider or the lab will notify you with the results as soon as they are available.

PCR vs Antigen Testing

Viral COVID tests are available as molecular and antigen tests. The molecular test, also known as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, usually delivers results within a few days since most of these tests are sent to offsite labs for analysis. The average turnaround time for PCR test results is 48 hours, but in some instances may be significantly longer due to backlogs related to insufficient lab volume and capacity. Antigen tests are also known as rapid tests and have an average turnaround time of between 15 to 30 minutes.

Both PCR and rapid COVID tests can be used to test people exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, those who were close contacts to COVID-19, and those without COVID-19 symptoms who live or work in a high-risk setting (such as a nursing facility); or those individuals who are identified as part of outbreak detection and response. The rapid COVID test is also recommended for the screening of residents or healthcare workers at skilled nursing facilities along with a PCR confirmation, and for repeat screening for the early detection and prevention of outbreaks in congregate settings (such as schools, workplaces, and prisons).

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. To reduce the risk of facing extra costs related to COVID testing, ask your primary care doctor to recommend a free COVID test site, and confirm there are no charges or fees for the test that are not covered by your insurance plan. Additionally, avoid getting a COVID test at a hospital or free-standing emergency room, as these facilities may charge fees for COVID testing and related services.

COVID-19 Testing FAQs

  • How much does COVID testing cost in Springfield?

In many cases, COVID testing can be free. Many state and local health departments continue to offer free testing to community residents as part of their response to the pandemic. In other cases, commercially insured patients, or those on Medicare or Medicaid, may receive testing at no out of pocket cost, or with a nominal office visit copay. For cash paying patients, or those that need rapid COVID testing which will deliver results in under an hour, COVID tests can range from $50 to $150 each. It is best to call your healthcare provider prior to getting tested to better understand the cost of the specific test you require.

  • Where can I get free COVID testing in Springfield?

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. Check with your Springfield-area health department as they are generally a good source for free COVID tests, or can at least point you in the right direction. Additionally, you can ask your primary care provider to recommend a free COVID test site.

  • Where can I get COVID testing in Springfield?

COVID testing is available at many outlets near Springfield including urgent care centers, retail clinics, primary care offices, health departments, and more. Different venues will have different types of tests available, many at different price points. Some testing sites are allowing walk-in patients, however, many are still requiring some degree of advance booking to control patient volume.

  • Where can I get a rapid COVID test in Springfield?

Rapid testing—both PCR (molecular) and antigen tests—is offered through many Springfield-area urgent care centers and physician offices, usually at an additional cost ranging from $50 up to $150 per test. Usually this will allow you to get results back in under an hour, and require advanced booking through the provider. However, if you can wait 24 hours for your results, many labs are turning around send-out lab tests in that time frame, which could save you some money.

  • How to make an appointment for COVID testing in Springfield?

Same-day and next day appointments for COVID testing in Springfield are bookable directly through Solv. Simply browse the list of healthcare providers conducting COVID tests above, find one with a “Book Online” button, and book a time that aligns with your schedule stating “COVID-19 Test” as your reason for visit.

  • Can I get tested for antibodies if I am sick with COVID-19 Springfield?

An antibody test for COVID-19 might inform you if you previously had a coronavirus infection. Because it can take between 1–3 weeks after an infection for your body to develop these antibodies, an antibody test during an active infection would not be successful. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test.

  • Do I need a COVID test if I have been vaccinated?

Even if you have been fully vaccinated, if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, experts believe that you should be tested yourself, particularly if you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms commonly aligned with the coronavirus.

  • How long does COVID testing take?

Getting a COVID test is quick. Most tests are done with a nasal swab, which takes less than a minute to swab both nostrils. Depending on where you get your COVID test, this means you could be in and out of the testing site in as little as 10-15 minutes. During busy times—particularly around holidays—testing sites may be busier than usual and wait times may be longer.

  • How long does it take to get COVID test results in Springfield?

Most labs are returning send-out molecular (PCR) COVID test results within 24-48 hours of the test. Some sites take longer, so call and ask if the reason for the test is proof for travel. Rapid COVID tests are processed on-site and are able to deliver results in under an hour, sometimes in as little as 15 min.

  • Do COVID tests detect the Delta variant and Omicron variant?

Regular COVID tests are able to detect both the Delta variant and Omicron variant in that they can determine whether or not you have the coronavirus. However, they can't tell which variation is involved. That would necessitate genomic sequencing, which is a different process from regular virus testing that not all labs can undertake. Sequencing is uncommon and can cost up to $100 per test. Since the treatment is the same for any variant, it is not clinically useful to an individual patient to know whether the infection was caused by a variant or not.
