More people need to know that this Urgent Care on Hidden Valley Road corner is here and open, too. (Put the folding sign daily on Palomar sidewalk--not only in the big parking lot. I wish I had found this urgent care in 2019--when I got Covid 19 at the airport and also 2 years later after a bike event. The ERs in this area are poor. At this urgent care, I received timely care from an experienced doctor who gives his all, a friendly, attentive and mask-wearing reception team, and also about a week later, a follow-up phone call to ask how I was doing. I learned from this Urg Care that the antibiotic Amoxycillin really makes me extra sleepy. For me, the label should say more than "do not drive". For my sore throat, I take Amoxycillin with food and prepared to sleep 10 hours. There is an urgent care about 2 blocks from me--an unreliable, inconsistent one. I am thankful to have discovered the one at corner of Palomar Airport Road and Hidden Valley Road.

Recent COVID-19 Testing Reviews (20)

Other than the miscommunication between the front desk and physician re: covid testing, and where/when results are posted it was very clean and efficient. I was told by front desk that rapid testing opens at 9am but after MA took my saliva test and then, when I was seen by the physician, I was then told she COULD do the Swab test (after the saliva test had been done) which was all good (except the extra fee for the THAT test) I did the test, got results and went on my way after my hour and 45 min visit. That’s not bad considering within hours there will be a full waiting room. I was told by physician to check a website for saliva test results, but then at check out the front desk said they’d call me. I asked for portal info which she gave me while assuring me I’d be phoned by physician. The physician on the other hand strongly assured me my results would be posted. I don’t mind either way, as long as I can GET the results. Both physician and front desk MA were very friendly even at 4:45 AM when I checked in, until 6:30 am when I was finished. I walked out with Swab test results, and a prescription so I’m very satisfied. I know they’re only 2 people and are in a very trying field, I salute them.

I was disappointed I had to pay a copay for a doctors visit when my son just needed a covid test- something that is advertised on website and outside the clinic. There should be more communication up front that you have to see a doctor as well if you want to get tested. I also have yet to receive my son’s covid test results and it’s been 7 days.

Wait was long but, because covid testing. Staff was great and helpful.

- Verified patient on 12/24

I had made an appointment and showed up 10 minutes early. After sitting in the lobby for an hour they told me it would be a while longer & that they would call me on my phone if I wanted to leave. This was nice but that option would have been nice from the start so I wouldn’t be exposed or possibly expose others since I was feeling sick. The assistant was clueless about the difference between the covid tests. She did get the information I asked & came back to tell me. After I decided on the rapid test she said the provider would be right in. She ended up returning before he came and swabbed me. She was not friendly and seemed new or inexperienced/uninterested in her patients. I was told I would have the rapid results in 15-20 minutes. The provider was kind & informative- great bedside manner. 45 minutes later they tell me she put in for the wrong test so I got swabbed again & sent home with the expectation to get a text message with the results. Overall my visit was frustrating. I try to have sympathy for how hard our medical support have been working and I’m sure they are all stressed but the lack of knowledge and friendliness from the assistant was the biggest dampener of my visit.

Unfortunately I thought that the rapid covid test was covered by insurance. I was shown the remaining balance for the deductible and the amount of copay. I sent all the info for my PPO insurance. I was charged $140. Too much given the time it took to do this and other facilities are not charging this. Yikes!!

I had a hard time understanding the COVID testing process and I felt like I was being duped into a consultation with a doctor when all I wanted was the rapid and PCR covid test. Also, i went in on Saturday and I still have not received my results after 5 days (Thursday night).

My daughter had croup but wasn’t improving so I made an appt at 11:30. I arrived at 11:15 and eventually was told I needed to have her COVID tested. I was back to the waiting room by 12. I thought I’d be in a room quickly since my appt was 30 min prior but it was obvious I wasn’t going to be seen soon. I told them I would take an appt at 2. I arrived by 1:45 and was in a room by 2:05. I didn’t the see the dr until 2:45. I was frustrated because I had appts and the provider explained they run an urgent care. She was condescending. I’ve been coming there since it opened. I have 4 kids one seen on Wednesday. I understand what an urgent care is but I also understand appts and customer service. I eft the first time because it was taking far longer with an appt and I needed to have my son at an event but the right thing would’ve been to fast track me the second time and for the provider to not treat me the way she did. So disappointed. I love the staff but they should’ve tried to get me in faster and when they didn’t just say sorry not have some provider explain to me how an urgent care works. Does she know what an appt is?

I needed to get Covid tested because I came in contact with someone that tested positive. I feel that this medical place isn’t organized. My appointment was at 1pm, I arrived at 12:30 and it took a long time with the process. They explained what needed to get done but didn’t start the process right away. They gave me the forms 40 minutes after my arrival. They took my medical cards one hour after my arrival, they took my payment, one hour and 10 minutes after my arrival. Teleported with a doctor one hour and 20 minutes after my arrival, and finally got the test done, one hour and 30 minutes after my arrival. I feel it was a lot of waiting around. The girls were friendly but all the walking in and out and having me wait in my car was torturous to see. I don’t understand why forms couldn’t be ready and administered, collect all the necessary documentation and payment all at once and be ready with the next and next step. Please take these steps into consideration to help the public and their location run smoothly. Thank you.

Umm still waiting for my covid test results…

- Verified patient on 8/5

My 1 hour COVID test has still not been reported 90 minutes later. All else was good, but all I needed was the results my covid test which I still do not have.

- Verified patient on 11/7

I try to get a COVID test today, I have downloaded the app and ask me to check in once I arrived. My appointment is 12:20pm and I checked in at 12:00pm, and app told me no one in front of me, but no one calls me in as well, I thought they will text me when is my turn. So I wait in my car. Until the time, still no text messages or nothing, so I walked in. And the rep seems like don’t even know I have an appointment today, and keep asking me all different questions, like are you Anna, I am like no, I am xx. And she is asking r you get vaccines today, I said no, I am here for testing. And she keep asking all other questions on the form which I already filled out on the web. I just wondering the app not really communicating to the clinic, so the rep keep asking me all the same questions again. The second thing is once I sit in the little office, the nurse instead measuring my height and weight, she asking me what is my height and weight to fill out the form. So I provided the answer. She tried to measure my blood pressure, and the number not coming out, and at the end she gave up, and didn’t have my blood pressure. The last thing is when I sit in the little office to wait for my result since I order the rapid test. I saw the sink is dirty with all the water spot on the surface. The one time use ear measurements not full and no one filling up. And the doctor walked in at the end to do a summarize, and her white coat is actually very dirty with black and yellow color around the pockets areas. She probably wear it for a while. But the test results turn out with in 15min, and I am negative. This is what I want to know.

My first experience was terrible. I followed instructions and waited in my car. Checked in with staff upon my arrival at 3:15pm. I was forgotten waited over an hour. Then I got a call asking if I got my covid test and they expressed that the person who does testing bad just left and if not could I return between 5:30-8:40pm. I really needed my PCR test for a show. So I decided to go eat and return after 5:30pm but called first to make sure someone would take me. A young lady by the name April answered the phone I explained my experience and I was returning for my test but had to double check. She sprung into action and my experience was amazing she walked me through every step and hadbme drive to her location and text them soon as I arrived she did mine and my daughters PCR covid test and had a little to no wait time. She truly is an example of patient care. She made me forget I was mad and had lost so much time during the day that I even missed a important meeting. But April took care of us and we got our tests some so all was forgiven. Grateful, Selene Falcon

I called to ask about Covid testing. I was told I could walk in for a rapid covid test until 7:00pm. So I drove across town at 12 :30 to be told "we aren't going to test until 2:30" I explained that I had JUST called to ask. The girl at the front told me "well, we need our lunch breaks". I understand this, but very poor management. And she was completely rude about the whole exchange. I was there for a test two days ago and it was $140.00. Today it was $160.00. No explanation. The only good thing was the sweet man who did my swab. Very poor management

I was given a covid test but not given anything to treat covid. I even asked if there is somevform of treatment but I was told just take Tylenol and Motren. I didn't receive any follow up ether. Also the wait was very long.

I came for a rapid & PCR Covid test. No rapid tests available. I needed to pay out of pocket as you wouldn’t accept my out of state medical insurance. I was not told at time of payment that I needed to see a doctor to get a PCR test. I was only informed after I waited 2 hours. Total wait time was 3+ hours.

I came in for a rapid covid test. Although the staff had their hands full, you would never know that by the way they treated each patient there. AMAZING resilience shown by these Healthcare workers!! Blessings to you all!!! I would certainly recommend this facility.

Went for rapid Covid test, all good but name spelled wrong, no big deal to me as not needed for travel. Shame though.

Needed rapid Covid test. Staff is fast and courteous!!

I went in there for Covid test everybody was very friendly. My appointment was at 7 PM and I was walking out of there by 7:05 PM. Good job

- Verified patient on 12/24

My ONLY complaint- which CAN be managed is that there should be, at the facility and at the end of filling out the online appointment (especially where it involves Covid testing) - that you can be waiting up to an hour (as I did) for a Covid PCR test - and you would see a nurse first, then a dr, then finally a nurse so as to understand the wait (we as patients/clients could then better manage our own appointments without feeling anxious or upset at staff) - and if it’s a Rapid Covid test - the time is quicker (maybe 30 minutes) . So since I brought my teen with me and naively thought I would be in and out in 15 min tops, he killed the car battery while listening to the radio- and I had to wait another 30 min for AAA service - etc. (I know- not the fault of the clinic- actually the staff was nice enough to let my kid use the bathroom while waiting for me.

San Marcos COVID Testing & Rapid Testing

Types of COVID Tests

There are two types of coronavirus tests (COVID-19 tests) available, those that can test for a current infection (viral test) and those that can test for a past infection (antibody test).

Viral COVID testing can be done in a few different ways, the most common being nose swabs, but saliva tests are becoming more popular. Some tests are processed out on-site and can provide results in as little as 30 minutes. These are called rapid COVID tests. The majority of tests, on the other hand, are collected at the clinic on-site and then submitted to off-site labs for processing. Results can take up to 2-3 days to arrive.

Antibody testing looks for a past infection and may not reveal if you have an active COVID-19 infection because antibodies can take up to three weeks to form in your body. The presence of COVID antibodies may help to prevent you from becoming infected with the same virus again; but, because the clinical understanding of COVID-19 is still developing, it's unclear how long that protection will continue.

Who should get tested for current infection

The CDC currently defines four instances where COVID testing is recommended:

  1. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 including fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
  2. If you have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19. Close contact is defined as within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. If you have been vaccinated, or tested positive in the past 3 months and not experiencing symptoms, you do not need to be tested.
  3. If you are unvaccinated and participated in high-risk activities where distancing is not an option. This could include travel, large social or mass gatherings, crowded indoor settings, etc.
  4. If you have been referred to get a COVID test by your healthcare provider or local health department.

How is testing done for COVID-19?

Most COVID tests are collected by a nasal swab. A member of the medical team puts a swab inside your nose for a few seconds on each side to collect the sample. After that, the samples are packaged according to CDC guidelines and tested on-site or transported to a facility for testing. The lab will test samples for the presence of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID infection and either your care provider or the lab will notify you with the results as soon as they are available.

PCR vs Antigen Testing

Viral COVID tests are available as molecular and antigen tests. The molecular test, also known as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, usually delivers results within a few days since most of these tests are sent to offsite labs for analysis. The average turnaround time for PCR test results is 48 hours, but in some instances may be significantly longer due to backlogs related to insufficient lab volume and capacity. Antigen tests are also known as rapid tests and have an average turnaround time of between 15 to 30 minutes.

Both PCR and rapid COVID tests can be used to test people exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, those who were close contacts to COVID-19, and those without COVID-19 symptoms who live or work in a high-risk setting (such as a nursing facility); or those individuals who are identified as part of outbreak detection and response. The rapid COVID test is also recommended for the screening of residents or healthcare workers at skilled nursing facilities along with a PCR confirmation, and for repeat screening for the early detection and prevention of outbreaks in congregate settings (such as schools, workplaces, and prisons).

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. To reduce the risk of facing extra costs related to COVID testing, ask your primary care doctor to recommend a free COVID test site, and confirm there are no charges or fees for the test that are not covered by your insurance plan. Additionally, avoid getting a COVID test at a hospital or free-standing emergency room, as these facilities may charge fees for COVID testing and related services.

COVID-19 Testing FAQs

  • How much does COVID testing cost in San Marcos?

In many cases, COVID testing can be free. Many state and local health departments continue to offer free testing to community residents as part of their response to the pandemic. In other cases, commercially insured patients, or those on Medicare or Medicaid, may receive testing at no out of pocket cost, or with a nominal office visit copay. For cash paying patients, or those that need rapid COVID testing which will deliver results in under an hour, COVID tests can range from $50 to $150 each. It is best to call your healthcare provider prior to getting tested to better understand the cost of the specific test you require.

  • Where can I get free COVID testing in San Marcos?

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. Check with your San Marcos-area health department as they are generally a good source for free COVID tests, or can at least point you in the right direction. Additionally, you can ask your primary care provider to recommend a free COVID test site.

  • Where can I get COVID testing in San Marcos?

COVID testing is available at many outlets near San Marcos including urgent care centers, retail clinics, primary care offices, health departments, and more. Different venues will have different types of tests available, many at different price points. Some testing sites are allowing walk-in patients, however, many are still requiring some degree of advance booking to control patient volume.

  • Where can I get a rapid COVID test in San Marcos?

Rapid testing—both PCR (molecular) and antigen tests—is offered through many San Marcos-area urgent care centers and physician offices, usually at an additional cost ranging from $50 up to $150 per test. Usually this will allow you to get results back in under an hour, and require advanced booking through the provider. However, if you can wait 24 hours for your results, many labs are turning around send-out lab tests in that time frame, which could save you some money.

  • How to make an appointment for COVID testing in San Marcos?

Same-day and next day appointments for COVID testing in San Marcos are bookable directly through Solv. Simply browse the list of healthcare providers conducting COVID tests above, find one with a “Book Online” button, and book a time that aligns with your schedule stating “COVID-19 Test” as your reason for visit.

  • Can I get tested for antibodies if I am sick with COVID-19 San Marcos?

An antibody test for COVID-19 might inform you if you previously had a coronavirus infection. Because it can take between 1–3 weeks after an infection for your body to develop these antibodies, an antibody test during an active infection would not be successful. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test.

  • Do I need a COVID test if I have been vaccinated?

Even if you have been fully vaccinated, if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, experts believe that you should be tested yourself, particularly if you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms commonly aligned with the coronavirus.

  • How long does COVID testing take?

Getting a COVID test is quick. Most tests are done with a nasal swab, which takes less than a minute to swab both nostrils. Depending on where you get your COVID test, this means you could be in and out of the testing site in as little as 10-15 minutes. During busy times—particularly around holidays—testing sites may be busier than usual and wait times may be longer.

  • How long does it take to get COVID test results in San Marcos?

Most labs are returning send-out molecular (PCR) COVID test results within 24-48 hours of the test. Some sites take longer, so call and ask if the reason for the test is proof for travel. Rapid COVID tests are processed on-site and are able to deliver results in under an hour, sometimes in as little as 15 min.

  • Do COVID tests detect the Delta variant and Omicron variant?

Regular COVID tests are able to detect both the Delta variant and Omicron variant in that they can determine whether or not you have the coronavirus. However, they can't tell which variation is involved. That would necessitate genomic sequencing, which is a different process from regular virus testing that not all labs can undertake. Sequencing is uncommon and can cost up to $100 per test. Since the treatment is the same for any variant, it is not clinically useful to an individual patient to know whether the infection was caused by a variant or not.
