I had been struggling with on going congestion and cough and have felt really run down. The team at Mercy Urgent Care were very encouraging, saying, "we are going to get you feeling a lot better." It was an easy process to check in and be seen, and I am thankful I went there today.

Friendly Staff

I thought I Scratched my eye yesterday but exam showed no sign.  Irritation and pain were increasing so saw Will today.  Staff was wonderful in every way.  Thorough, professional and friendly.  I would definitely recommend Novant’s Black Mountain office.

I tested postive for Covid with an at home test and my husband had similar symptoms. I easily made an appointment for the next morning and they got us in quickly, confirmed our diagnosis and discussed next steps. The NP was attentive and knowledgable and the staff was very professional and compassionate.

I artived at 8:40 and although first was told there were already appts so I scheduled for 11:30 Arrived and had to wait to grt an xray because someone else was having a full physical Not sure of the linear reasoning between the two After 90 minutes finally told them I had to go as it was 30 minutes after they had done my xray. I miss the efficiency when Carol Hoban was there. Ultimately I got my answer via a phone call from the LPN but that was really way too long to just find out if my toe was broken I was trying to give The sisters of Mercy the business but mist likely wont do it again anytime soon.

These are the most efficient, professional and friendly care providers I’ve visited at an urgent care facility. I booked my appointment online and was seen on time. The facility is clean and attractive and it’s now my go-to place when I need to be seen quickly. Excellent, thorough care!

I don't understand the negative reviews on Google- I've been a patient at MAHEC's Ob-Gyn Practice, their Psychiatry and Mental Wellness Center, and at the Family Medicine practice for the last five years. My initial experience was for pre/postnatal care from 2018-2020 and I couldn't have asked for a more incredible team of doctors and nurses before, during, and after the birth of our son. I was with their psych department for a few months and have been with Family Medicine since 2020. Everyone I've interacted with through the years has been a truly incredible human who genuinely cares. You can't fake the level of compassion each of them have shown. I have always received timely responses to any phone calls I've placed and I typically receive a follow-up call to ensure everything was taken care of or to ask how I was feeling- whatever the situation may have been. I have nothing but praise for everyone I've encountered and will never go anywhere else for my healthcare needs.

Recent COVID-19 Testing Reviews (20)

Wait was a little long before the PA came on to chat (maybe 60 min) but typical of a health care visit especially during high volume times/events (like being the only Covid testing site in my county). Staff was knowledgeable and friendly though.

Dr. Steen was available right at my appointment time. His connection was poor, but he was able to call me to do the visit over the phone instead of as a video chat. He allowed me time to explain my symptoms, reviewed them with me, and explained his suggestions for follow up. The nurse who performed my covid test was friendly and explained the process well.

Telehealth is pretty confusing. I came for a covid test, but needed a consultation first? The man who came to take my vitals was kind and gentle. But he also administered the test (before the consultation). I remained in the parking lot for the consultation for close to an hour. The woman I talked with didn’t get any additional information, and was surprised that I already had the covid test and said that I was done then. Glad I got a test, but wished I could have just left after getting tested instead of prolonging my “visit” for an hour.

- Verified patient on 10/20

It was hard. Had trouble breathing with a mask (asthma). Wanted to fill out forms and deal with everything NOT virtually. So the receptionist let me have the forms in the car. I was there from 8 or so until noon. Dan (EMT) thawed and was fine as did the receptionist. Powell super friendly and appealing. X ray guy fine. Glad I went but not surprised that Covid test was negative and chest x ray ok. Thank God I wasn’t kicked out to be fobbed off on the ER because I did NOT want to go: I am not suicidal. 😜 Bravo Urgent Care! 👩‍🌾

- Verified patient on 11/17

I had questions about whether or not I needed a Covid test. I submitted everything on the night before and set the appointment the next morning. The appointment with the medical staff was caring and thorough. I was able to immediately get my test outside from my car at the clinic. This gave me a great sense of emotional relief which I am the most grateful for. Thank you so much.

- Verified patient on 8/29

Great except that it has now been over a week without COVID test results. I was told the results would be available in four days. I was tested in September 25. Thanks.

Jennifer came right on the phone very polite went through some stuff with me about my covid test it was a great experience I was like so stressed about it but it was turned out to be wonderful.

- Verified patient on 11/19

I really appreciate all that you do considering everything going on. I was able to get a covid test within a couple of hours of booking an appointment and the results less than an hour after my test. The doctors and staff are outstanding and I appreciate the peace of mind in knowing the results so quickly prior to being around my elderly parents. Thank you so much!

After a difficult time at our family provider insisting I had covid and asking me to please leave there premises I was told to go to Mercy Urgent Care in WEAVERVILLE NC. They couldn't have been more acceptable and helpful. Covid test was negative and I was given help for my issue.

- Verified patient on 12/10

Staff was very nice, wait time was average, the only frustrating things were (A) myself, my husband and my son were seen days apart. My husband and I have insurance and my son does not. You charged him $300 for testing. Money he didn’t have. I thought that was very wrong. (B). Everyone’s second Covid test was different. Not certain why? That was very confusing and when you are sick you can’t really decipher anything.

- Verified patient on 12/31

I went in for a covid test and since my cell phone was broken they did accommodate me to come inside and were very thorough and polite made it very easy for me. I did the online checking and it was easy but lengthy I have insurance so cost was zero. Wait time was short. and check in in was easy. online booking was simple but lengthy yes, yes I would recommend them.

Mercy Urgent care is the ONLY location in the entire town of Brevard conducting Covid test before Christmas. While the wait was a touch long, everyone appeared to be understanding, given the tremendous demand for Covid test. The staff was wonderful and very apologetic for the wait times, as they diligently tried to accommodate the needs of each patient. I received a call regarding my test results (thankfully negative) within the 30 minute time frame as promised. I would definitely recommend Mercy Urgent Care.

Drive up Covid test and video meeting. All went well. Curbside test by Amber was done quickly and friendly with explanation. Video worked well enough and all info coming to me came quickly

Prompt service, good guidance during virtual visit. Compassionate and quick COVID testing when I was directed to the office. Appreciated a personal call about the result. Some of the data (meds, email address) didn’t populate from the registration “paperwork” to the EMR and had to be verbally repeated and entered by the provider. I believe that providers should have their credentials/degrees listed in addition to thei name.

The staff was really friendly. My son is 5 & the nurse lady was very very understanding when he wasn't wanting to take the covid test. I dont know who she was but she was awesome.

- Verified patient on 12/8

This is my favorite place for Covid testing. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I can tell that the nurse practitioners take care with the telemedicine calls. And they’re tests are 96% accurate 👍🏼

- Verified patient on 11/13

The NP Gerri was very helpful and made me feel at ease when talking to her about getting a Rapid COVID test & a PC test tomorrow. She answered all the questions I have at this time.

- Verified patient on 12/8

The teledoc visit was very well done. Wonderful doctor. The front desk staff was unfriendly and not helpful. I know this is a trying time for everyone, but kindness matters. Especially when you’re the one welcoming customers into the practice, and answering already troubling questions. The doctor who performed the covid test was very friendly and made the process of getting tested painless.

- Verified patient on 12/31

I needed a COVID test and the experience was very quick and positive! I had a quick virtual visit that was very informative and got a quick swab at the South Asheville location which was easy and felt very safe. I had the results of the rapid test before I even got home. Overall a very positive experience!

- Verified patient on 12/15

I scheduled a telehealth appt for covid testing and had the appointment in my car outside of the local urgent care center. I received the test quickly. One thing, Dr. Foster mentioned emailing/texting me information for LabCorp sign up so that I can see my covid results as soon as they are released and I have not received that info yet.

Asheville COVID Testing & Rapid Testing

Types of COVID Tests

There are two types of coronavirus tests (COVID-19 tests) available, those that can test for a current infection (viral test) and those that can test for a past infection (antibody test).

Viral COVID testing can be done in a few different ways, the most common being nose swabs, but saliva tests are becoming more popular. Some tests are processed out on-site and can provide results in as little as 30 minutes. These are called rapid COVID tests. The majority of tests, on the other hand, are collected at the clinic on-site and then submitted to off-site labs for processing. Results can take up to 2-3 days to arrive.

Antibody testing looks for a past infection and may not reveal if you have an active COVID-19 infection because antibodies can take up to three weeks to form in your body. The presence of COVID antibodies may help to prevent you from becoming infected with the same virus again; but, because the clinical understanding of COVID-19 is still developing, it's unclear how long that protection will continue.

Who should get tested for current infection

The CDC currently defines four instances where COVID testing is recommended:

  1. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 including fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
  2. If you have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19. Close contact is defined as within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. If you have been vaccinated, or tested positive in the past 3 months and not experiencing symptoms, you do not need to be tested.
  3. If you are unvaccinated and participated in high-risk activities where distancing is not an option. This could include travel, large social or mass gatherings, crowded indoor settings, etc.
  4. If you have been referred to get a COVID test by your healthcare provider or local health department.

How is testing done for COVID-19?

Most COVID tests are collected by a nasal swab. A member of the medical team puts a swab inside your nose for a few seconds on each side to collect the sample. After that, the samples are packaged according to CDC guidelines and tested on-site or transported to a facility for testing. The lab will test samples for the presence of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID infection and either your care provider or the lab will notify you with the results as soon as they are available.

PCR vs Antigen Testing

Viral COVID tests are available as molecular and antigen tests. The molecular test, also known as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, usually delivers results within a few days since most of these tests are sent to offsite labs for analysis. The average turnaround time for PCR test results is 48 hours, but in some instances may be significantly longer due to backlogs related to insufficient lab volume and capacity. Antigen tests are also known as rapid tests and have an average turnaround time of between 15 to 30 minutes.

Both PCR and rapid COVID tests can be used to test people exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, those who were close contacts to COVID-19, and those without COVID-19 symptoms who live or work in a high-risk setting (such as a nursing facility); or those individuals who are identified as part of outbreak detection and response. The rapid COVID test is also recommended for the screening of residents or healthcare workers at skilled nursing facilities along with a PCR confirmation, and for repeat screening for the early detection and prevention of outbreaks in congregate settings (such as schools, workplaces, and prisons).

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. To reduce the risk of facing extra costs related to COVID testing, ask your primary care doctor to recommend a free COVID test site, and confirm there are no charges or fees for the test that are not covered by your insurance plan. Additionally, avoid getting a COVID test at a hospital or free-standing emergency room, as these facilities may charge fees for COVID testing and related services.

COVID-19 Testing FAQs

  • How much does COVID testing cost in Asheville?

In many cases, COVID testing can be free. Many state and local health departments continue to offer free testing to community residents as part of their response to the pandemic. In other cases, commercially insured patients, or those on Medicare or Medicaid, may receive testing at no out of pocket cost, or with a nominal office visit copay. For cash paying patients, or those that need rapid COVID testing which will deliver results in under an hour, COVID tests can range from $50 to $150 each. It is best to call your healthcare provider prior to getting tested to better understand the cost of the specific test you require.

  • Where can I get free COVID testing in Asheville?

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. Check with your Asheville-area health department as they are generally a good source for free COVID tests, or can at least point you in the right direction. Additionally, you can ask your primary care provider to recommend a free COVID test site.

  • Where can I get COVID testing in Asheville?

COVID testing is available at many outlets near Asheville including urgent care centers, retail clinics, primary care offices, health departments, and more. Different venues will have different types of tests available, many at different price points. Some testing sites are allowing walk-in patients, however, many are still requiring some degree of advance booking to control patient volume.

  • Where can I get a rapid COVID test in Asheville?

Rapid testing—both PCR (molecular) and antigen tests—is offered through many Asheville-area urgent care centers and physician offices, usually at an additional cost ranging from $50 up to $150 per test. Usually this will allow you to get results back in under an hour, and require advanced booking through the provider. However, if you can wait 24 hours for your results, many labs are turning around send-out lab tests in that time frame, which could save you some money.

  • How to make an appointment for COVID testing in Asheville?

Same-day and next day appointments for COVID testing in Asheville are bookable directly through Solv. Simply browse the list of healthcare providers conducting COVID tests above, find one with a “Book Online” button, and book a time that aligns with your schedule stating “COVID-19 Test” as your reason for visit.

  • Can I get tested for antibodies if I am sick with COVID-19 Asheville?

An antibody test for COVID-19 might inform you if you previously had a coronavirus infection. Because it can take between 1–3 weeks after an infection for your body to develop these antibodies, an antibody test during an active infection would not be successful. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test.

  • Do I need a COVID test if I have been vaccinated?

Even if you have been fully vaccinated, if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, experts believe that you should be tested yourself, particularly if you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms commonly aligned with the coronavirus.

  • How long does COVID testing take?

Getting a COVID test is quick. Most tests are done with a nasal swab, which takes less than a minute to swab both nostrils. Depending on where you get your COVID test, this means you could be in and out of the testing site in as little as 10-15 minutes. During busy times—particularly around holidays—testing sites may be busier than usual and wait times may be longer.

  • How long does it take to get COVID test results in Asheville?

Most labs are returning send-out molecular (PCR) COVID test results within 24-48 hours of the test. Some sites take longer, so call and ask if the reason for the test is proof for travel. Rapid COVID tests are processed on-site and are able to deliver results in under an hour, sometimes in as little as 15 min.

  • Do COVID tests detect the Delta variant and Omicron variant?

Regular COVID tests are able to detect both the Delta variant and Omicron variant in that they can determine whether or not you have the coronavirus. However, they can't tell which variation is involved. That would necessitate genomic sequencing, which is a different process from regular virus testing that not all labs can undertake. Sequencing is uncommon and can cost up to $100 per test. Since the treatment is the same for any variant, it is not clinically useful to an individual patient to know whether the infection was caused by a variant or not.
