I booked my appmt. Online for 5 pm.  Checked in early no problem. People kept walking & the little assistant kept bringing more people in before me. Finally the APRN noticed this happening & had to straighten problem out & I got in at 7 pm & spent the next 45 minutes being talked to & examine & going over my problem.  The receptionist was not aware of appmts taking precedence to “walk-ins”  well handled!!!

Accidentally dropped a grill cleaner with a knife like edge. It hit the top of my left foot and made a very deep cut. The blood was gushing out and no amount of pressure could stop it. I went Priority Urgent Care East Haven and was immediately taken care of. They cleaned the wound and gave me stitches. They were very kind and incredibly helpful. They also told me how to care for it. I need to return in 10 days to have the stitches removed and I am looking forward to seeing the staff again.

Everything was fast and pleasant! Telehealth appointment was available immediately, drove right down to physician one to get my covid test went right in, staff was pleasant except for desk person did not acknowledge me at all even though she didn’t need to check me in.. doctors were amazing and everything was simple and quick. Very efficient!

We went here for COVID testing and were so happy we did. No wait. We had appointments. The staff on the phone was very nice and helpful. The staff that came to the car was excellent, friendly and efficient. He made the test a breeze. Welcoming and friendly people make healthcare visits so easy! Thank you for making our life easier. We appreciate you!

Went in for a COVID test due to some unexpected travel. Staff was very friendly, the wait time was much shorter than I expected. An overall great experience!

I went for a covid test , very nice and professional, I had Shawn do the test and he was great and Steve the doctor , he was very helpful, stressful time but they made me feel good

- Verified patient on 9/19

I went there for my third Covid test. The staff is very professional and friendly given the environment they are working in. Each time has been a quick test procedure and very fast turnaround on results. I’m pretty pleased

I came in for a Covid test but with specific health concerns . The PA Christine took so much time with me and listened . She arranged a chest exray for 2 days later as well . She was really exceptional .

- Verified patient on 4/8

Efficient covid testing compared to other testing sites. I like the option of both rapid and pcr test. This is ny preferred urgent care office and I have many to choose from. Thank you

- Verified patient on 12/19

The nurse who did both my rapid test and the other COViD test was very nice and very gentle. She made my experience a positive one. Thank you! This is the only location I will go to have a COViD test done. I have gone two times prior to this time and it’s always been positive. Wait time was very quick which I was shocked by!

- Verified patient on 11/13

I came to this location for a covid test for work. The staff was super informative about everything I asked. And Adam made the check in super easy.

- Verified patient on 7/28

I had to give five stars because basically overall every time I go to Physician one, I have no problem.I would recommend, and I have already to friends,to go to Physician one.The person that came in to give me the test she, said to me nothing is free, Covid testing is not free .Covid testing is supposed to be for free, I wasn’t too crazy about her personality , I was asking her questions about the PCR that she said she was giving me and it seem like she was getting annoyed to answer questions. I didn’t understand right away .I am a school bus driver, you hear on the news testing is free. The Women ,that gave me the test I’ve never seen her there before and I didn’t get her name.

- Verified patient on 1/31

I was very upset to hear when my daughter got the covid test done we couldn’t wait in the car afterwards. I did not like the fact of waiting in that small room for a hour wondering what kind of sickness the person had in there before us . It really was upsetting. Next time I have to go I will insist that I wait outside after. Because now we are negative, but could have caught something being in that room. I felt claustrophobic waiting and thinking what if?

- Verified patient on 4/1

The staff was friendly and accommodating. The wait time was less than 10 minutes. However, I did not appreciate the moral lecture from the doctor after receiving a positive Covid test. In the future, please remind your doctors to keep the discussion about morality out of the exam room. I am responsible for my friends and family not of those who choose of their own free will to not get vaxxed or those who are unable to be vaxxed because of their health circumstances.

Went for covid testing. I felt there was great communication from the staff and everyone I spoke to was very friendly. I was not inside the building so I couldn't comment on the cleanliness of the facility.

- Verified patient on 6/23

Arrived @ 7:30 am for covid test called tel no as instructed on door. Phone rang fo 1 hr straight. This was happening to 10/ 15 other people also waiting everyone asking what the heck . Then people starting walking inside. I eventually also went inside with my phone still ringing. Gal at desk took my name & tel no & told me to continue to wait outside ( I had already been out side for hour& half. .I was starting to think I was going to leave when I got call from that point on it went well. Everyone was very professional place very clean . Gal that administered test very nice & informative. Didn't take to long to recv results. PA that gave me my results sat ,& explained everything . She wss excellent she took her time & asking if I had any questions . Thank God my test was negative. Except for the terriable time trying to register to have test everything else went well

- Verified patient on 11/18

Went For a Covid test and the nurse didn’t explain anything! She just shoved the stick down my nose and before I can say anything she did the other side and very hard too! She done walked out the room and I sat there for almost 15 confused! However the doctor then came in to give me my results and she was very pleasant!! When I went to my car I cleaned my nose and I was bleeding!

- Verified patient on 11/20

This experience getting a COVID test was fast and the staff was so friendly! It was later at night and everyone was still upbeat after a long, busy day. Thanks to your wonderful staff!

My wife and I called this morning for a Covid test. Was told to come in. We filled out the forms in the car and after a short wait came in to take the test. All went very smoothly

- Verified patient on 10/26

After virtual visit Covid test. Waited 30 min. Though was supposed to be short wait time per the instructions I received. Not a big deal but was taking time out of work, so would have been nice if it was quick.

- Verified patient on 10/22

Went for covid test. While there was a delay in getting tested, they warned about the possibility in advance, so it was not a surprise. They were very efficient once I was called in.

- Verified patient on 12/18

Walked in for Covid test convenient, I had a friendly welcome an explanation of what to expect and what to do with the test results Good all around 😊

Derby COVID Testing & Rapid Testing

Types of COVID Tests

There are two types of coronavirus tests (COVID-19 tests) available, those that can test for a current infection (viral test) and those that can test for a past infection (antibody test).

Viral COVID testing can be done in a few different ways, the most common being nose swabs, but saliva tests are becoming more popular. Some tests are processed out on-site and can provide results in as little as 30 minutes. These are called rapid COVID tests. The majority of tests, on the other hand, are collected at the clinic on-site and then submitted to off-site labs for processing. Results can take up to 2-3 days to arrive.

Antibody testing looks for a past infection and may not reveal if you have an active COVID-19 infection because antibodies can take up to three weeks to form in your body. The presence of COVID antibodies may help to prevent you from becoming infected with the same virus again; but, because the clinical understanding of COVID-19 is still developing, it's unclear how long that protection will continue.

Who should get tested for current infection

The CDC currently defines four instances where COVID testing is recommended:

  1. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 including fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
  2. If you have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19. Close contact is defined as within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. If you have been vaccinated, or tested positive in the past 3 months and not experiencing symptoms, you do not need to be tested.
  3. If you are unvaccinated and participated in high-risk activities where distancing is not an option. This could include travel, large social or mass gatherings, crowded indoor settings, etc.
  4. If you have been referred to get a COVID test by your healthcare provider or local health department.

How is testing done for COVID-19?

Most COVID tests are collected by a nasal swab. A member of the medical team puts a swab inside your nose for a few seconds on each side to collect the sample. After that, the samples are packaged according to CDC guidelines and tested on-site or transported to a facility for testing. The lab will test samples for the presence of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID infection and either your care provider or the lab will notify you with the results as soon as they are available.

PCR vs Antigen Testing

Viral COVID tests are available as molecular and antigen tests. The molecular test, also known as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, usually delivers results within a few days since most of these tests are sent to offsite labs for analysis. The average turnaround time for PCR test results is 48 hours, but in some instances may be significantly longer due to backlogs related to insufficient lab volume and capacity. Antigen tests are also known as rapid tests and have an average turnaround time of between 15 to 30 minutes.

Both PCR and rapid COVID tests can be used to test people exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, those who were close contacts to COVID-19, and those without COVID-19 symptoms who live or work in a high-risk setting (such as a nursing facility); or those individuals who are identified as part of outbreak detection and response. The rapid COVID test is also recommended for the screening of residents or healthcare workers at skilled nursing facilities along with a PCR confirmation, and for repeat screening for the early detection and prevention of outbreaks in congregate settings (such as schools, workplaces, and prisons).

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. To reduce the risk of facing extra costs related to COVID testing, ask your primary care doctor to recommend a free COVID test site, and confirm there are no charges or fees for the test that are not covered by your insurance plan. Additionally, avoid getting a COVID test at a hospital or free-standing emergency room, as these facilities may charge fees for COVID testing and related services.

COVID-19 Testing FAQs

  • How much does COVID testing cost in Derby?

In many cases, COVID testing can be free. Many state and local health departments continue to offer free testing to community residents as part of their response to the pandemic. In other cases, commercially insured patients, or those on Medicare or Medicaid, may receive testing at no out of pocket cost, or with a nominal office visit copay. For cash paying patients, or those that need rapid COVID testing which will deliver results in under an hour, COVID tests can range from $50 to $150 each. It is best to call your healthcare provider prior to getting tested to better understand the cost of the specific test you require.

  • Where can I get free COVID testing in Derby?

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. Check with your Derby-area health department as they are generally a good source for free COVID tests, or can at least point you in the right direction. Additionally, you can ask your primary care provider to recommend a free COVID test site.

  • Where can I get COVID testing in Derby?

COVID testing is available at many outlets near Derby including urgent care centers, retail clinics, primary care offices, health departments, and more. Different venues will have different types of tests available, many at different price points. Some testing sites are allowing walk-in patients, however, many are still requiring some degree of advance booking to control patient volume.

  • Where can I get a rapid COVID test in Derby?

Rapid testing—both PCR (molecular) and antigen tests—is offered through many Derby-area urgent care centers and physician offices, usually at an additional cost ranging from $50 up to $150 per test. Usually this will allow you to get results back in under an hour, and require advanced booking through the provider. However, if you can wait 24 hours for your results, many labs are turning around send-out lab tests in that time frame, which could save you some money.

  • How to make an appointment for COVID testing in Derby?

Same-day and next day appointments for COVID testing in Derby are bookable directly through Solv. Simply browse the list of healthcare providers conducting COVID tests above, find one with a “Book Online” button, and book a time that aligns with your schedule stating “COVID-19 Test” as your reason for visit.

  • Can I get tested for antibodies if I am sick with COVID-19 Derby?

An antibody test for COVID-19 might inform you if you previously had a coronavirus infection. Because it can take between 1–3 weeks after an infection for your body to develop these antibodies, an antibody test during an active infection would not be successful. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test.

  • Do I need a COVID test if I have been vaccinated?

Even if you have been fully vaccinated, if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, experts believe that you should be tested yourself, particularly if you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms commonly aligned with the coronavirus.

  • How long does COVID testing take?

Getting a COVID test is quick. Most tests are done with a nasal swab, which takes less than a minute to swab both nostrils. Depending on where you get your COVID test, this means you could be in and out of the testing site in as little as 10-15 minutes. During busy times—particularly around holidays—testing sites may be busier than usual and wait times may be longer.

  • How long does it take to get COVID test results in Derby?

Most labs are returning send-out molecular (PCR) COVID test results within 24-48 hours of the test. Some sites take longer, so call and ask if the reason for the test is proof for travel. Rapid COVID tests are processed on-site and are able to deliver results in under an hour, sometimes in as little as 15 min.

  • Do COVID tests detect the Delta variant and Omicron variant?

Regular COVID tests are able to detect both the Delta variant and Omicron variant in that they can determine whether or not you have the coronavirus. However, they can't tell which variation is involved. That would necessitate genomic sequencing, which is a different process from regular virus testing that not all labs can undertake. Sequencing is uncommon and can cost up to $100 per test. Since the treatment is the same for any variant, it is not clinically useful to an individual patient to know whether the infection was caused by a variant or not.
